Social Media and Global Happenings
2011 : Egypt
Social media created awareness and sparked a political revolution in Eqypt from the three decades of violent repression the people had to endure. It is said the revolution was to happen inevitably, but social media sparked and brought about movements, created international support, and helped organize rallies. Sascha Meinrath, director of the New America Foundation’s Open Technology Initiative said, “Social media have become the pamphlets of the 21st century, a way that people who are frustrated with the status quo can organize themselves and coordinate protest, and in the case of Egypt, revolution.” The regime fell in eighteen days. 2013: Phillipines
The Typhoon Haiyan broke out in Manilia, Philippines with devastating results. About 10,000 civilians were estimated to be dead and communities were leveled by winds. While international help was embraced, the Philippines utilized resources to ensure help to come to all communities which were affected. The people used social media and created statutes and word feeds to carry pleads for assistance. Any smart phone or internet service was used to "tag" local news reporters and other officials for aid. Philippines living in the United States started gathering donations for Haiyan survivors. Aid arrived from Japan, Norway, Russia, the United States, the United Arab Emirates, the Vatican, New Zealand and Australia. (2013, Anonas-Carpio)
